Global tourism is at a turning point. Both a victim and a driver of climate change, it accounts for 8 to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions¹. The tourism economy is highly exposed to physical risks (heatwaves, melting snow, rising sea levels) and transition risks (regulations, changing behaviours, societal pressure). For a responsible investor, the tourism sector offers a rich field of analysis, combining vulnerabilities with opportunities for transformation.

Physical and transition risks come with a shift in tourism consumption patterns

Climate-related physical risks directly impact tourism infrastructure: ski resorts facing dwindling snow, coastlines threatened by erosion, tropical islands exposed to cyclones. These extreme events disrupt traditional business models and require massive investments in adaptation.

Transition risks, on the other hand, stem from regulatory pressure (carbon taxes, environmental standards), consumer expectations (low-carbon, local, ethical tourism), and changes in value chains (mobility, accommodation, food). Companies that fail to adapt risk losing competitiveness and even facing investor divestment.

At the same time, climate constraints are reshaping how we travel

With the rise of local tourism post-COVID, domestic or regional trips have grown in popularity, reducing the carbon footprint linked to air travel. We are also seeing longer off-season stays: to avoid heatwaves or overcrowding, tourists are opting for milder periods, helping to spread visitor flows more evenly. There is also a growing quest for meaning and impact: travellers now want their trips to align with their values (respect for nature, support for local communities, energy sobriety). Finally, thanks to digitalization and in the interest of transparency, booking platforms now integrate ESG criteria, environmental labels, and impact indicators, enabling travellers to choose accommodations that meet today’s expectations.

The tourism economy relies on listed players to face these changes

Several publicly listed companies in the tourism sector stand out for their initiatives toward a more sustainable model, each in their own way, by integrating climate challenges into the core of their business. Montagne Neige et Développement (MND), a specialist in mountain resort equipment, develops innovative solutions to address climate challenges: valley lifts, urban cable cars, smart sensors for artificial snow, and the use of renewable energy. MND turns climate constraints into industrial opportunities while strengthening the resilience of mountain regions. Accor, a major player in hospitality, incorporates ESG considerations into its global strategy through reducing water and energy consumption, protecting biodiversity, partnering with environmental NGOs, and developing low-carbon offerings in its properties. Finally, Pierre & Vacances, Europe’s leading operator of vacation residences, focuses on the ecological rehabilitation of its sites, the promotion of rural areas, and the development of local tourism, less dependent on-air travel and more respectful of local ecosystems.

Faced with the challenges posed by climate change, the tourism sector must fundamentally rethink its models. Physical and transition risks are no longer projections but realities that affect profitability, visitor numbers, and the long-term viability of destinations.

For the informed investor, this transformation represents a strategic opportunity: to support players capable of innovating, adapting, and reducing their environmental footprint. Investing in responsible tourism means supporting an economy essential to employment and local development while meeting the demands of a world in transition. It also means anticipating the expectations of tomorrow’s travellers, more conscious, more demanding, and more committed.
